Gateway St. Petersburg to Welcome Four Apartment Complexes

Gateway St. Petersburg is the regional transportation crossroads of the bay area, where four new apartment complexes are either under construction or in the planning stages, by different developers, to capture the needs of the housing market.

Elan Gateway, a 240-unit complex is currently under construction by Greystar Real Estate Partners of South Carolina, with an opening date of April 2013. Azure, a 308-unit luxury complex, being developed by Hines of Houston, is under construction in Carillon. Aspire at Gateway, a 150-unit complex on seven acres, is under contract with 908 Development Group of Tampa and is expected to close in May 2013, construction to begin soon after. Tampa, a 150-unit complex by Bayfair Properties, to be located on the East side of Fourth Street along Gandy Boulevard, is still in the planning phase. Learn more about Gateway St. Petersburg.

USF-SP Entrepreneurial Program Earns National Honor

The Entrepreneurship Program at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USF-SP) College of Business has been named the Outstanding Emerging Entrepreneurship Program in the U.S. by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

The United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship is the world's largest independent organization dedicated to advancing entrepreneurship. The award honors an emerging program that "reflects innovation, quality, potential viability, comprehensiveness, depth of support, sustainability and impact." The USF-SP program was established just three-years ago, with its students earning the prestigious CEO Startup Simulation Challenge in 2012. Learn more at

Urban Edge Apartments Planned for Downtown

Urban Edge, an $8-$10 million project, is the fifth development over recent months to receive approval from the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and City Council to move forward with construction.

The 125-unit apartment complex will be located south of Fourth Avenue South between Third and Fourth Streets. The apartment units will include a mix of 40 market rate and 85 senior units financed by affordable housing tax credits. E.A.T. St. Pete Announced for November 2013

Just announced at the beginning of the new year, E.A.T. St. Pete is the latest event inspired by Bill Edwards Presents, Inc., with co-sponsorship by HSN and Visit St. Petersburg/CLW CVB, and produced by Karlitz and Company.

E.A.T. St. Pete will take place November 15-17, 2013, tagged as the "St. Petersburg and The Bay Area Festival of Food, Wine, and The Arts." The festival promises an unforgettable three days of fine food, wine, spirits, and the arts, with the uniqueness and beauty of St. Petersburg as its backdrop. The festival will offer exciting events including dinners, culinary demonstrations, and a grand tasting event that will feature celebrity chefs and personalities. Boutique Hollander Hotel Opens Downtown

A new hospitality provider has emerged in downtown St. Petersburg, the Boutique Hollander Hotel is located at 421 4th Avenue North, on the outskirts of the historic Old NE Neighborhood and within walking distance of downtown.

The hotel aims to provide all conveniences for an enjoyable stay, including: 21 craft beer Tap Room and Restaurant, Rande James Spa, and the Coffee House Bar. Room rates are attractively priced and the hotel touts a grand veranda to relax and soak up the downtown atmosphere.

Central Arts District Announces Murals

The Central Arts District was formed in 2010 and aims to promote the arts in St. Petersburg. As part of this mission, the District has elicited local artist, Sebastian Coolidge, to create a series of animal on bicycle images, by utilizing the planters that line Central Avenue. He will also incorporate the trees as an extension of the animal bodies.

The Central Arts District is located along Central Avenue from Fourth Street to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street and spans the First Avenue(s). It strives to provide a unique identity to the aspiring arts venues along Central and welcomes all who embrace the arts. The District includes many outstanding art establishments, such as: The 600 Block, Morean Arts Center and Hot Shop, and Florida Craftsmen Gallery.

Pinellas Commercial Real Estate Database: This resource was created by Pinellas County Economic Development. It provides businesses, entrepreneurs, and site selectors a resource to find available commercial buildings and sites, while also bringing increased visibility to development and redevelopment opportunities in the County.

St. Petersburg/CLW Film Commission Location Database: The Visit St. Petersburg/CLW CVB Film Commission launched an online database that allows clients to scout locations online. The database contains roughly 300 distinct locations, with locations being added continually. It provides detailed location information and photos, and sites are searchable by categories and geographical locations.

Transportation News

Pinellas Alternatives Analysis: This advanced transportation plan has been named as one of the country's Top 50 Transportation Projects by the Sierra Club. The project has been recognized and used as an example of outstanding multi-agency partnership by transportation officials nationwide.

FDOT I-4 Website: The I-4 Ultimate project, a $2 billion 21-mile revamp of Central Florida's main interstate system is hosting a community forum on March 4th and has a new website to inform the public.

PSTA Sales Tax for Transportation: The PSTA board voted to move forward with the one-cent transit sales tax referendum, to provide funding to expand and improve the County's transit system, possibly to include a new light rail system. The public will have one year to consider the transit increase and contribute to the transit plan, with a voter's referendum on the November 2014 ballot. PSTA

FDOT Gandy Boulevard Expansion: Beginning Spring 2013, FDOT will begin Phase I of a new overpass project to span between 9th and 4th Street(s) on Gandy Boulevard.  Read More

City Highlights Events Calendar
Redistricting Commission: The City is convening its first charter mandated Citizens Redistricting Commission. The Commission must complete its work and forward a redistricting proposal to City Council by February 15, 2013. City Council District boundaries are drawn to ensure compliance with the charter, including: equal population, compactness, and contiguity. The Mayor and each member of City Council appointed a representative to serve on the commission. The Commission will hold it's last public hearing for redistricting on February 5th at City Hall, beginning at 5:00 pm

Creative Cities Advisor: Peter Kageyama, author of "For the Love of Cities," is a resident of St. Petersburg and has recently been tapped by the Mayor to give back to the community. Peter will voluntarily serve as an advisor to the Mayor on creative cities movements and changes that could be beneficial to St. Petersburg. Learn More

Student Ambassador Exchange Program: Through the city's International Relations Committee, high school juniors residing in St. Petersburg are invited to broaden their cultural horizons by applying to serve as one of St. Petersburg's Student Ambassadors to Takamatsu, Japan, this summer.
